Mix Six: “Deep In The Heart of Indie”

Better late than never, right? This week’s mix is another one from the vast indie vault where bands trying very hard to stand out have very few outlets to get some exposure. So, if I can do my 1% for the cause, I’ll do it!

On with the mix…

“District Manager USA” Forp (Listen HERE) A German trip-hop group whose songs have wonderfully boring titles like this one.

“Cruel” Michele Wylen (Listen HERE) Things I know about Michele Wylen…1. She’s from Portland, Oregon. 2. She’s 19. 3. Her song “Cruel” was described by a journalist from “Local Cut” as ““One of the most perfect pop tracks never to have graced FM radio…yet.”

“Michael Brannan” Barenaked Ladies (Listen HERE) A promotional “gift” to eMusic’s one millionth customer — whose name is Michael Brannan.

“I Want Candy” Bow Wow Wow (Listen HERE) I know, you’re probably thinking “Hey, that song was released by a major label!” Well, you’d be correct in that claim, except for the fact that this version was from an EP released by Cleopatra /The Orchard.

“The Well and the Lighthouse” Arcade Fire (Listen HERE) What do you get when you combine one part New Order with two parts The Cure? I’m not quite sure, but Arcade Fire sure comes close.

“Senses Working Overtime/Grass/Love On A Farmboy’s Wages” XTC (Listen HERE) This recording is from C-Lo’s hubby, who interviewed the band at in in-studio mini concert recorded at Y-95 in Dallas back in the late 80s. I’ve put mp3s of this recording on this blog before, but this medley of songs is really quite brilliant!

  1. I only know one song, I Want Candy. But I guess you knew that. The others, I just have to get use to. It was a nice mix of music

  2. That’s the fun of it, right? Getting to hear new music. I think you’ll like XTC and Barenaked Ladies. Chee might like Michele Wylen, and Big Sis will probably like Forp because of the samples used in the song.

  3. The Forp song was a little weird, I gotta say…sounded like something David Lynch might use if he got tired of the Julee Cruise sound.

  4. Why did the Arcade Fire song remind me of Echo and the Bunnymen as well. Lots of influences going on there, I think. Which is good!

I couldn’t do the whole Forp song, sorry! 🙁

  5. Forp is not for everyone, but the album has a kind of Kraftwerk quality. Arcade Fire is pretty popular right now, and I think it’s because they really embrace that whole early 80s post-punk sound (Echo is certainly included).
