Mix Six “Number Ones of the 90s”

Welcome to Friday!

I was leafing through one of the Billboard books on chart topping hits, and in the back page, they printed some of the number one hits from the 50s to the end of the 90s. It was all there! The good, the bad, and the really bad. However, there were some gems in there, too.

Now that we have about 7 years of distance from the 90s, I hear some folks say the 90s were a kind a wasteland when it came to good pop music. And while I agree there were a few years that were iffy, it’s not as bad as the dying days of disco. That was some truly bad music that assaulted the airwaves.

But let’s get to it, shall we? Since I’m limited to 6 songs, I decided to start in 1994 and end, of course, in 1999.

And away we go! A sampling of the top hit of the mid to late 90s — with ballads thrown in for Cherry who thinks I’m not a fan of slow jam. πŸ˜‰

“Stay (I Missed You)” Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories Spent 3 weeks at #1 starting 8/6/94. Was featured in the so-so film, “Reality Bites,” and had a video where Lisa was so damn earnest, that I just wanted to help her. I didn’t know how I was going to help, but I really wanted to!

“Take a Bow” Madonna 7 weeks at the top slot — which happened on my brother Steve’s birthday! What date was that? 2/25/95!

“No Diggity” BLACKstreet Wasn’t it all rap, country, and grunge in the 90s? It sure seemed like it for a long time, but soon the rough edges smoothed out on all three genres, and each music style settled into a kind of harmless pop fizz. This song was number one (add echo effect here) for 4 weeks — and it all started on 11/9/96 boys and girls!

“Wannabe” Spice Girls There are two pop sensations that remind me of my niece, Shannon. Madonna and the Spice Girls. And guess what? Both are well represented in this mix. Now you can dance in your room saying “Girl Power,” flashing peace signs, giving yourself a cute nickname, and, if you really, really want, wear skimpy outfits. Number one for 4 weeks on 2/22/97.

“One Week” Barenaked Ladies The song that had lyrics poured from a pop cultural blender and a great video featuring un-pop looking Canadians who were clever like a toilet lever. Interestingly enough, this song only spent spent one week at the top slot. 10/17/98.

“No Scrubs” TLC Sometimes the best really does come at the last. From the first moment I popped this CD into my player in 1999 I knew this group had recorded something great. There are some CD/albums that are “headphones only” records, and this is one of them. The songs are great, but from an audio-geek’s perspective, the production was just amazing. Sadly, this was the group’s last CD with the original lineup. But what a swan song! 4 weeks at the top! 4/10/99.

And there ’tis. Another Mix Six to start the weekend!

PK…out!

  1. You’re the music man, and I’m a lyrics girl…really love the lyrics. So my favorites from this bunch? The first and the last. What’s not to like about someone with a clever little song who’s brave enough to put in the lyric, “no no no…baaaad”. Too good.
Then there’s TLC, with the message I wish more young men and women would hear. Because why, WHY would a young man think he’s going to do well with a girl by yelling out of his car at her? And, sadly, it MUST work sometimes, or why would so many do it? Here’s the lyric:
    “I don’t want no scrub
A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me
    Hanging out the passenger side
    Of his best friend’s ride
    Trying to holler at me”
    πŸ™‚ Love it.
    Great Mix!

  2. Oh, and now, getting ready to hop in the shower, and I’m singing, in a fake Hindi accent,
“No, I don’t want your number,
No, I don’t want to give you mine,
No, I don’t want to meet you knowwhere,
No, I don’t want none of your time”
    FYI. πŸ˜‰

  3. Fake Hindi,or “Findi” is the fun language that, like some Star Wars language, sounds like a real language but it’s not. πŸ™‚
I should add that J had a hand in picking a few of these songs, too! No Scrubs was one of them. One Week was the other. And Madonna was the third.

  4. Dude….rockin’ mix.
I, too, agree with J. LOVING the “No Scrubs”. Good times. What woman doesn’t love that song?
Good work Py. Good to have you back “in the mix”.

  5. Py – I haven’t had a chance to listen today. Work maladies – yucky for a Friday!

  6. ohhh WEeee! I love it!
Just a few weeks ago I re-entered Lisa Loeb’s Tails album and Barenaked Ladies into my playlist. Good stuff!
    Thank you!

  7. Geez. This takes me back to my college days. Hmm, wonder what the Spice Girls are up to now? Awesome Mix. Thanx for the download.

  8. Aaaaack, the early 90’s! A wasteland period for music if there ever was one. Not to say that everything that came out then was crap. But close.
The Spice Girls!? My ears are bleeeeediiiiiing… πŸ˜‰
But I’m cool with Bareneaked Ladies and TLC.

  9. Gina: There was some good stuff in the early 90s, but I had trouble finding it. πŸ™‚
Shelliza: Good question about The Spice Girls. I’ll ask my niece because she’s still a fan (believe it or not).
