Here we are, another Friday, another Random Sample for your weekend. This week, I’ve got some “off the beaten path” songs that may be familiar and may be kind of “huh?”
Here’s we go!
“Suspended in Gaffa,” Ra Ra Riot (Download) I’ve been reading a lot about this band in various music mags, and finally got around to downloading the album. There’s a heavy New Order vibe that permeates many of the songs, but I was surprised by this cover of a Kate Bush tune. The band does a surprisingly admirable cover of a song that, to be frank, is not that easy to “make your own.” They don’t quite get there with making it their own, but at times they get close.
“When We Was Fab,” George Harrison (Download) This was kind of the “sleeper” single that followed up the massively popular “I’ve Got My Mind Set On You.” Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) had the cajones to make a former member of the “Fab Four” sound like another member of ELO.
“Nostaugia,” Peixe Kru (Download) Years ago, I was having lunch with a friend of mine who was an editor of a music magazine and he asked me “What’s the difference between Drum-n-Bass and Jungle.” At the time, I coudln’t tell the difference between the two, but now I think I have an answer: Jungle has a more soulful edge. I’m almost certain you’ve never heard this tune (or have heard of this artist), but give it a shot ’cause I think you’ll like it.

August 22, 2008 at 2:01 pmNice sample of songs, though I’ll confess I got tired of ‘Fab’ when it was popular. The Cake Bush cover sounds so…well…80s. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The last song, for some reason, seemed like good music to clean your bathroom to. Just sayin’.

August 22, 2008 at 2:14 pmI guess that last song is good for bathroom cleaning, but I always thought Drum-n-Bass/Jungle was dinner party music. 🙂
Oh, and I like that you called Kate Bush “Cake” Bush.
