Not feeling in the holiday mood? Well, to help you get in the mood, here’s a mix with some kitsch, some, schmaltz, and some fruity stuff. Call it my holiday musical roll.
“Little Drummer Boy” Los Straitjackets Maybe it’s stereotypical of me to include this, but since I live in California, I might as well have a surf version of a holiday classic to go along with the lack to snow and the fake Christmas tree.
“Dig That Crazy Santa Claus” Brian Setzer Orchestra Doesn’t this sound almost like every other up tempo song Brian has done under the moniker “Brian Setzer Orchestra?” I guess that’s not a bad thing when you’re looking for party Xmas music, huh.
“Hava Negila” Irving Fields Trio Anyone feel like a martini and grabbing something from the California Kosher plate?
“Oh, Hanukkah Groove” Frank London Big Band Talk about having a swinin’ Hanukkah! Oh wait, Hanukkah is over.
“Black Christmas” The Emotions I wish you and yours a beautiful black Christmas.
“It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” Hall and Oates For years, as I endured H&O’s inane cover of “Jingle Bell Rock” I seriously wondered if they hated humanity. This song makes me realize they don’t.
“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” Loreena McKennitt McKennitt’s version of this classic slants toward the fruity and new age side, but I like it because she threw so many diverse musical elements into the mix.
