Big fun today, kids! You not only gave me some great suggestions for a Halloween mix, but Gina from Just Another Day rose to the challenge and sent me a list of songs she thought would make a great mix. And then, there’s my Halloween mix from last year that got thrown into your goodie bag. Happy Halloween everyone and enjoy the music.
First up: Songs you suggested culled from yesterday’s requests (Sorry LaLuna, but your suggestions arrived just as I was putting this post to bed).
Michael Jackson “Thriller” Well, you can’t go wrong with this classic from MJ — at least according to Beenzzz who wanted to hear a bit of the gloved wonder.
Vic Mizzy “Main Theme” The Addams Family is the only family that I know who can be described as “ooky.” But when you’re trying to rhyme “spooky” and “kooky,” there really aren’t many options left, huh.
Iron Maiden “The Number of the Beast” Back in 1982, I went on a trip to England with my parents, and we were watching “Top of the Pops” — a TV show that basically spotlights what’s popular in the UK. Anyway, after Kim Wilde was finished singing “View from a Bridge,” they showed the video for this song. What was surreal (and a little scary) was the fact that my aunt and uncle — who, at the time, were two “more-than-middle-age” Guyanese people — were nodding their heads to Iron Maiden in a groovin’ sort of way.
Kidz Bop “Monster Mash” If Lalapunci wants to really be scared, I’ve got to pull out the big guns with this version of Monster Mash. Really any version of a song done Kidz Bop style is a fright fest, don’t ‘cha think?
Oingo Boingo “When the Lights Go Out” Gina wanted some Oingo Boingo, and rather than pull out my copy of Dead Man’s Party, why not go with this sleeper Halloween song.
Lemonheads “Skulls” I think Eric is a kind of guy who loves to throw curve balls. Not only did he pick a Lemonheads song that’s kind of obscure, but it’s from a recording that’s out of print! Guess what? I found a copy! Home run E! Home run.

[Here’s the mix I did last year that has a song J requested!]
Since Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year, and I do my mix sixes on a Fridays, I suppose I’m right on time with this mix.
Download, enjoy, and play it back when the kiddies come a-callin’ for their treats on Tuesday!
“Hell” Squirrel Nut Zippers Wasn’t this song a breath of fresh air when I came out in the 90s? These days, it gets its fair share of Halloween mileage — which is not a bad thing!
“Werewolves of London” Kidz Bop Kids This ought to scare the living hell out anyone! Did the producers of Kidz Bop not listen to the lyrics? Still, if you’re feeling a bit masochistic, this is a good version to let the sweet pain flood right in.
“I Put a Spell On You” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins I’m partial to the recorded version, but this live version reaches many of the same maniacal heights as the original — with a few vocal surprises that made me laugh.
“Red Right Hand” Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Remember these phrases: “Trust No One, “The Truth is Out There,” and “God, I’m Such a Geek!” Okay, that last one was my personal motto when I got obsessed with the X Files, but boy do I love the gloomy groove Nick Cave was able to conjure on this one.
“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” Bauhaus Any Goth boys and girls out there? If so, then this is your theme song! So get dressed up in black, smoke those clove cigarettes, and look utterly bored and/or depressed about how cool you look. (This is J’s request, by the way).
“(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” Blue Oyster Cult Cowbell and all, this is such a great song!

And now, our guest mixer this week is our good bloggy friend Gina who, as I said, got inspired and came up with a full mix — in addition to the Oingo Boingo suggestion.
She titled this mix:
“Songs that Brought Me Back into the 21st Century”
Okay, I’m going to hand the writing duties over to Gina ’cause it’s her mix!
I have been stuck in an 80s rut for too many years. Oh, to be sure, there were a few bands that broke through the haze of neon and big hair I was wallowing in, but they were few and far between. Now, thanks to Pandora, I have been turned onto so many bands that I had heard the buzz about but never actually heard — or bands I had never heard of, period. I am proud to state that it has been 3 months and five days since I quit the 80s cold turkey. Well, almost. But close enough. And never you mind that some songs, like The Dandy Warhols has heavy 80s influences and was actually produced by Nick Rhodes. Not to mention that the video is almost an exact replica of “Planet Earth.” Just let me remain in my delusion that I am progressive.
“Can You Read My Mind” The Killers
“The Last High” The Dandy Warhols
“Paralynzed” Rock Kills Kid
“Brighter Than Sunshine” Aqualung
“For One Day” Sylvan
“A Bad Dream” Keane

October 26, 2007 at 6:42 amOMG, THREE mix sixes? That’s no trick, it’s a Treat! (Well, except for the Kidz Bop…that’s a trick).
I’m looking forward to listening to these later, when it won’t wake any neighbors to have the speakers on!

October 26, 2007 at 10:43 amI second ML, WOO WEEEEEE! And J, AWESOME! And I’m not just saying that because one of them is mine! 😉
But seriously, thank you for not making me listen to “Dead Man’s Party,” the worst Boingo song after “Weird Science.” They have so many better ones and I’m always amazed at the popularity of those two.

October 28, 2007 at 2:11 pmThat was a lot of music. This must have taken you a while to do. I loved the Thriller song. It really took me back to the good old days.
