One Party State

Duopoly: “An economic or political condition in which power is concentrated in two persons or groups.”

Whenever a strong third party candidate throws his hat in the ring during a presidental election (Ralph Nader anyone?) it becomes pretty obvious that The System is rigged so Republicans and Democrats have a lock on who voters choose for national office.

But what about The System when elections are about a year away?  How do members of opposing parties act in Congress when opposition to the agenda of one party is the political platform of the other?  Well, if you’re in the Democratic party, you roll over and give the Republicans everything they want.

Want a good example of this?  Well, Tim Grieve at Salon has a great post that’ll make you fume (if you’re on the liberal end of the spectrum) or cheer (if you’re on the conservative end).  Whatever the case, you’ll see this story as a textbook case of duopoly.

  1. I’d love to see California start electing Congress Reps. according to a multi-member district method. We would bring an actual multi-party democracy to America. Just a pipe dream…

  2. I’m so sick of the democrats, who are so damn afraid of their own shadows, they can’t get up enough backbone to stand up to the republicans. Makes me sick. All of the crap and propeganda and being called a traitor only works if we let it.

The picture of the soda machines reminded me of that Billy Joel song…

“rock and roller cola wars, I can’t take it anymore!”…which pretty much sums up the frustration with the political ineptness of our system.

  3. It makes me to weep. I just want to crawl under my desk and suck my thumb in dispair!

  4. And you wonder why I don’t want to be a Democrat anymore! Well, not you personally, but you know what I mean, right?

  5. I am not a democrat, I am more a liberal. But I register under democrat so my vote will be noticed, and I did not want the current President to win a second term Fat lot of good that did..
