Mix Six: “Let’s Get Eclectic”

Another week, another mix, and it features non-RIAA music. I happily admit to really enjoying this subscription to eMusic. There’s a lot of stuff that’s not really to my liking, but there’s a surprising number of songs that I’m quick to hit the download button on. This week’s mix (like last week’s), doesn’t mix the songs on one mp3. Rather, I’ve loaded them individually to make it easier for you to choose your favorites.

Alrighty then…On with the show!

“Still Water” Daniel Lanois His last name is pronounced “Lan-wah” and not “Lan-oi-sze,” FYI. “Still Water” is just a lovely song that has a lot of emotional punch for such a quiet tune. For those who don’t know, Daniel Lanois was/is a big time producer who is probably best known for co-producing U2’s The Joshua Tree. Listen HERE
“What’s Left of the Flag” Flogging Molly Hey, it’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend. I had to put some Irish folk/punk in the mix! πŸ™‚ Listen HERE
“What’d I Say” Ray Charles I’ve been learning the opening measures of this song on my guitar, so I think I included this one for selfish reason — namely, so I could play along with Ray. Listen HERE
“Jaan Pehechaan Ho” Mohammed Rafi I grew up hearing a number of Bollywood classics in our house because my mom was such a fan of the Indian films of the 50s and 60s. However, I don’t remember this song being played as part of my childhood soundtrack. Like many people, the first time I heard this song was during the opening credits of the film “Ghost World.” Listen HERE
“Mental” Pipas This is one of those bands I just stumbled upon while trolling the wilds of eMusic. The song is somewhat fragmentary, but kind of dreamy as well. I would tell you more about the band (if I could find out more), but they shun the standard narrative for a more obscure bio that goes something like this: “lupe and mark sing the songs that make their world go around. short, bittersweet.” Listen HERE
“Littlewing” Tanya Donelly I was a big fan of Donelly’s work with Belly and really liked her first solo effort. Once she had children, however, her music became oh-so quiet. When I saw that she had released another CD, I was reticent about listening to it. I wasn’t sure if I could take another CD about the joys of motherhood in ballad form. But, this song is actaully kind of sweet, and it’s not a ballad! Listen HERE

Okay, newly converted Indie fans, that’s it for this week! See you on the other side (i.e., Monday).

  1. I didn’t know Donnely had a new album! I’m looking forward to hearing it. And, really, all of these songs. πŸ™‚

  2. Daniel Lanois sort of looks like a young Neil Diamond. Talented guy

  3. Tanya Donnelly also wrote a few songs on the new Girl Authority (think Spice Girls meets KidzBop) album, which I’m reviewing next week. Bizarre.

I love finding new stuff on eMusic.

  4. Amy: I’ll make sure to check your blog next week to see what you think of the CD. Spice Girls meets KidzBop? I have to hear that!

  5. For some reason, I am finding that I don’t have the time to listen to all the music you are putting up, which is a damn shame.

It just might be that “moving” thing.

  6. Gina: That’s okay. I’m pretty sure you’ll like some of what’s on here. Since we have pretty similar taste in music, I think you’ll enjoy Flogging Molly and may even find Tanya Donelly interesting. So, if you have time, give those a “spin.” πŸ™‚
