Why is the anniversary of John Lennon’s death such a big deal? In addition to the death of a beloved figure in pop culture and music, he was a guy whose political and social evolution mirrored many of the 60s generation.

I was too young to understand the full effect of Lennon’s cultural reach by the time he died, but I loved the Beatles and liked a lot of what he did on his own. It’s hard to believe that he was around my age when Mark David Chapman shot and killed him outside his home in New York. The official word is that Chapman did it to gain fame, but after all these years Chapman’s name is not widely remembered.

John Lennon’s name, however much culturally conservative members of our society wished would fade into obscurity, has only grown in stature to the point that he is more of an icon than flawed human. He made some great music and fought passionately to remind people that the power of love and to live in peace are not things to be sneered at. Rather, to love, be loved and share life with those we care about in relative peace are some of the most powerful things that will help us to temporarily transcend the hell we humans create when our violent instincts prevail.

John Lennon would have been 67 today.

  1. Cheers to John Lennon. Nice tribute!

  2. Steve (my brother)is probably the biggest Lennon fan in the family. Obviously, he’s a fan of his music, but I think he loves Lennon’s sense of humor as well.

  3. Man, I can’t believe he would’ve turned 67 today. I never knew what to make of Lennon or the Beatles. I think I did like him the best though. 🙂

  4. He was certainly the most interesting of the four guys.

  5. […] Sad musings for a Friday morning.  Sorry about that.  My beloved Py put together a pretty groovy montage of John Lennon quotes and such.  Go take a listen. « Wish They All Could Be…   […]

  6. All you need is love!

For whatever reason, I have never liked John Lennon all that much. Perhaps is is Yoko I don’t really like and I just project that onto him.

  7. I’m not totally into the Beatles, but I grew up listening to them because of my mom. It is such a shame that a talent and a decent human being was taken from the world. I can’t believe he’d be 67!

  8. John was such a light in the world and is sorely missed. I always felt so for his son.

  9. Gina: The legions of people who dislike Yoko are quite large! The fact that John insisted that he and Yoko were one in the same was an oddity that really rubbed people the wrong way.

And Dot…It IS kind of mind-blowing to think John would have been 67.

  10. Little Py I remember this day. I was newly married, sitting in front of the TV thinking about what to cook for dinner. I remember the people on the TV all crying. That continued for days after.
    Big deal stuff
