Mix Six “Obsessions”

Download Mix Six “Obsessions” HERE

Happy Friday my bloggy friends! After laying my current musical obsessions on the table this week, I asked for suggestions for your musical obsessions and I got quite a lot. Alas, confined by my “Mix Six” rules, I can only feature six of these songs. But what songs! Seems my readers are a pretty eclectic group — as you’ll see from the song selection. I have to admit that mixing these wasn’t easy since I’ve got Mariah Carey and Traffic in the same mix. Nevertheless, I think this came out well.

One sidebar before we begin: I think this mix is not so much about musical obsessions as it is about songs you really never get tired of. However, the word “obsession” has a better ring than “not tired of it.” So, I’m keeping it! πŸ™‚

Alright, here we go…

“We Belong Together” Mariah Carey La Luna wanted this one because, it seems, you can sing like a chicken to the verses. I never thought of Mariah’s style of singing as analogous to a chicken, but once it was suggested, I’ve been giving it a try with amusing results. (I have to admit to liking this song quite a lot, too. However, it’s not in my obsessions list).
“Mr. Jones” Counting Crows C-Lo loves her Counting Crows, and who can blame her with this song! It has such a classic feel that it’s pretty clear why “Mr. Jones” was such a hit. I’m not sure what it is about this song that makes C-Lo hit repeat on her iPod when it comes on, but maybe she’ll tell us in the comments section.
“Up on the Catwalk” Simple Minds Gina at Just Another Day is such a new wave/alt rocker! And may the gods bless her for it. I used to love Simple Minds, and this song reminds me why they were such a great band. Boy, that Breakfast Club soundtrack gig really derailed their path to alt rock greatness, huh. But we all gotta pay the rent at times by taking the sell out gig. Nevertheless, this song was one of my favorites back in the 80s as well.
“Do Ya” Electric Light Orchestra Ml at Zee’s Space has a classic rock thing going on, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Just reflecting for a bit on ELO’s career makes me realize that they had a rather odd career (how do you explain their crossover from rock to…scoring the film Xanadu?). Ah well, just see Simple Minds’ for why we all have to take sell out jobs every now and then.
“Welcome to the Jungle” Guns -n- Roses Melissa (Yes, the Melissa who won the Mix Six contest) said she loves G-n-R! So…welcome to it! Oh, and no freestyle here! πŸ˜‰
“The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” Traffic I work with both Jeff and C-Lo during morning drive on the radio, and when I asked Jeff for his musical obsession, he was quick to point out that this song just does it for him. It’s an 11 minute tour de force, so get comfortable and listen to Steve Winwood before he was an Adult Contemporary hit maker.

  1. Oooooh. Great mix Py Korry! I love all of those songs and can’t wait to download it. Thanks for 3 things:
    1: A great mix
2: A great bit (yep, I’m stealing this one too)
3: Being our traffic reporter. Jeff and I miss you today.

    C LO
    OUT

  2. Awww, you’re making me blush. If you think I am new wave/alt, you should see Hubba-hubba! Does it still count if I like Barry Manilow?

What did ever happen to Simple Minds? I have this album on vinyl, and I loved all but one of the songs, I think. I blame Chrissie Hynde! πŸ˜‰

As for ELO, I think they kind of resist categorization, somewhat like the Moody Blues. But I love them both anyway.

  3. Loves some GnR! You’ve done it again!!

  4. I kind of thought, when you asked the original question, it was about songs that got stuck in your head and just wouldn’t leave. So I’m glad that you didn’t use mine, because then I’d be singing a song all weekend that, while ok, does get on my nerves a bit. πŸ˜‰

I have a confession to make. I liked the Xanadu album. Do you still love me?

  5. J: Of course I still love you! I just can't figure out how ELO got that gig –or why they took it in the first place. And I'm REALLY glad "Crazy" didn't make the cut. It's an okay song, but it gets annoying real fast.

Dot: Wasn't really a fan of GnR when then came out, but that song sure sounds great now! πŸ™‚

Gina: Simples Minds is still around. They released an album last year that Jefito thought was pretty good. Here's his review:

C-Lo: I love working with you can Jeff, too. But I DON'T miss getting up at 4am! It was very nice to a few extra hours of sleep this morning. Plus, I got to walk with Maya and J to Maya's school where one parent asked me: "My daughter wanted to know why you weren't on the radio this morning." PTO kid! PTO!

Ya know, I get more downloads here than I do at Limewire. I use these downloads for my workouts during the week, then come back on Friday for the next week’s. Thanks. AWESOME Mix, as usual.
Ahhhh, the luxury of sleeping in. Beautiful, isn’t it. One of the things I missed the most since I became a mother.
    Have a great weekend:)

  7. I was able to hear the music. It was easy to down load. Nice stuff…

  8. I love Gina’s taste in music. OMG! I had an ELO t-shirt with the Simon metallic flying saucer on the front(you know, the kind of transfer that makes your skin sweat right below it?!) AND I had Xanadu, The Album. I have no shame…

  9. Despite my lukewarm view of ELO, they were quite the hit machine back in the day.

  10. Py, thanks for giving me a bit of an ELO fix πŸ™‚
