If you’re anywhere near Portland, Oregon between September 7th-9th, you should check out MusicFest NW that has tons of local bands — some of whom got their start by attending the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls.
So, in honor of my trip to Portland — where I got some pretty good music — and the Music Fest, this week’s Mix Six features bands who are up and coming in the Northwest.
One of the great things about the music scene in Portland is that they put out a compilation CD of local bands every year under the moniker “PDX Pop Now!” I bought the 2005 and 2006 CDs and found a few songs that I thought had commercial radio potential — for an alternative rock format, that is. Indeed, this whole set is pretty alt rock, but it’s a very melodic alt rock vibe.
Also, in honor of Portland, I found some film/TV clips that either represent the Northwest, or just happend to be filmed in Oregon. Enjoy!

Film clip: “Animal House”
My G. Featuring Mikah G, Sleep, Zell “The Untold Story” You know those songs where you instantly crank the volume up on? This is one of those song. I just love the mix of styles and how the rappers run the gamut from robotic to high energy. Great song!
TV clip: “Twin Peaks”
The Gossip “It’s Over” Who says the 80s are history? No one told The Gossip, and even if they did, they probably wouldn’t care.
Film clip: “Stand By Me”
Antlerand “Rows of Unending Lines” This song took a few spins before I warmed to it, so give it a few spins and I think it’ll hook you as well. This is also known as one of those “big build up” song. You know, it’s starts kind of quiet and then explodes into a big, rockin’ finish.
Point Juncture, WA ” Cardboard Box”On the band’s website, they describe their music as “ethereal dreampop.” I just like the vibe.

The Blow “Pile of Gold” This is one of those quirky songs that for some unknown reason got stuck in my head after I first heard it — in a good way, of course.
Film clip: “The Goonies”
Sleater-Kinney “Rollercoaster” One of Portland’s most popular band in recent times. Alas, the great S-K is no more as the band has called it quits. However, we’ll always have the CDs!
