Another week, another music mix! This week’s mix is for Cherry at Cherry Extract who told me I had to “Love country music!” It’s difficult to love what I detest, but I did say that I liked country-ish music, so I guess I don’t really detest country. Ah well, no point in being negative. This is about good times, right? Right! Y’all have fun!

Track #1: Bob Dylan “Silvio.” During the 80s I went through I big Dylan phase where I bought a ton of his music and loved what I heard. This song was written by the Grateful Dead’s lyricist, Robert Hunter, and it’s got such a great, bouncy feel.
Track #2 Mindy Smith “Come to Jesus.” While mindlessly channel surfing one night (I am a guy, after all), I caught about 2 minutes of Smith’s video for this song on CMT. I thought, “What the hell? This is country?” I guess it is…
Track #3 Cowboy Junkies “Sun Comes Up, It’s Tuesday Morning.” If the 80s was the “Dylan Decade” for me, the 90s was a whole lotta “Junkies.” I just can’t imagine taking the lyrics to this song and trying to figure out how to sing them so they have some kind of melody. Thankfully, Margo Timmins did figure out her brother’s poetry and sang them with the intended sadness.
Track #4 The Wreckers “Leave the Pieces.” You didn’t think you were going to get away without have some Michelle Branch shoved down your throat, did you?
Track #5 Dan Tyminski “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Brilliant! Just brilliant! (and so is the movie!)
Track #6 Dixie Chick “Taking the Long Way.” While I’m not really a fan of this group, I thought this is a pretty strong song that has some great harmonies in the chorus.
Track #7 Mark Knopfler “Speedway at Nazareth” Even though Knopfler recycles some ideas from “The Man’s Too Strong” from Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms on this song, I still like this song because it builds with some wonderfully intense guitar playing at the end. If you read this blog, you’ll know I thought that this song was one of the high-points of the Knopfler/Harris tour.
