Random Sample 10-3-08

Here we go with another round of fun!

“Not Fade Away,” James Taylor I gotta say upfront, I’m not a fan of James Taylor. I know his voice is sweet, melodic, and comforting, but there was a point in the mid-’80s when I had this allergic reaction to his music.  However, this new album of covers has a few good tunes — like this Buddy Holly cover.  It’s nice to hear Taylor to kind of cut loose on this tune, but with a Bo Diddly beat, how could he not?

“Henslow’s Sparrow,” Gentoo This is a kind of groovy, dreamy instrumental that has a kind spacey feel to it.  Truly, what caught my eye as I was trolling eMusic, was the title of the sampler.  “Simulacra” is a nifty philosophical term that basically means a copy of a real thing, that is just as real. In musical terms, a live band playing music is just as real as the copy (i.e, the recording) of that performance.

“Irelande Douze Pointe,” Dustin the Turkey I got this CD a few weeks ago and have enjoyed many of the pop songs from this contest. When I first heard his song, I thought: “Hmm, seems Ireland has their own Fred Schneider.”  Then I started searching for Dustin the Turkey online, and well, this is Dustin.   Not quite a Fred look alike, but this is kind of an amusing song — which according the Wiki on it is about how the contest is scored.  It seems the scores are read in French and English, and the highest possible point is 12 (Douze in French).

  1. My favorite was definitely the second song. The third one was fun, but yeah, maybe a bit too Fredish for me. 😉

  2. Ok, that last song by Dustin the Turkey was just not my taste. I am having a hard time with the fact that it was entered in a contest even. Mean huh!
The James Taylor song is Ok. It is a different sound for him. My fav was the Tech-no song, I got into that.
