Mix Six Year End Blowout!

Welcome to the big year end blowout! You get three mixes for the price of, well, nothing! The first mix from Mike over at Mix 106.5 in San Jose, CA, and the second one is from yours truly. The last mix is to honor the greatness of James Brown. In addition to all the great music James created, his drummers have been key in creating what are now standard funk beats. Enjoy!

“Read My Mind” The Killers Even though this is Mike’s mix, I’ll add my comments since he didn’t provide any. The Killers’ follow up to “Hot Fuss” was, for me, the biggest letdown of 2006. But, after listening to this song quite a few times, it’s pretty good. So, thanks Mike for making me do a “second listen.” πŸ™‚
“I Don’t Feel Like Dancing” Scissor Sisters You made J very happy with this one. She loves this group and was pretty happy when she heard them in this mix!
“Say It Right” Nelly Furtado Not “Like a Bird” anymore. Any shred of “quirky” is gone in favor of a straight ahead dance groove for Nelly.
“The Sodom And Gomorrah Show” Pet Shop Boys I know, you’re probably thinking: “The Pet Shop Boys are still recording?” Yep!
“Analogue” A-Ha I know, you’re probably thinking: “A-Ha is still recording?” Yep!
“Martyr” Depeche Mode I know, you’re probably thinking: “Depeche Mode is still recording?” Well, sort of. This is the only new track from the band — which was included in their “Best of” CD.

“Lubbock Or Leave It” Dixie Chicks My new girlfriends! πŸ˜‰ This song is the one they opened with on their recent tour (perhaps their last?). It’s a rocker, too!
“Photograph” Nickleback Okay, this CD actually came out in 2005, but “Photograph” really took off at the end of 05 an into 2006.
“The Black Parade” My Chemical Romance I loved their last CD for all its overblown wonderfulness! Their follow-up was every bit as overblown, and that’s why I love it!
“Cherries In The Snow” Elk City Taylor at T-Sides featured this band on her blog, and I instantly fell in love with their sound. Very 80s, but “good” 80s!
“Well Thought Out Twinkles” Silversun Pickups Another recommendation from Taylor! She knows that I love Smashing Pumpkins, and said that I might like these kids as well. Guess what? I do!
“The Joker & The Thief” Wolfmother I was trying to play along (on drums, of course) with Eric at our practice space when he first starting playing with the opening riff. After that, I got the song and it’s been one of those that gets me to crank the volume to 11!

  1. Woweeee!!! This should keep me going for a while. I do love nickleback. And way to go putting your girlfriends, the Dixie Chicks, in the year end mix πŸ™‚

  2. Holy Smokies a lot of work went into this big blow out. Yoooww. Some of these I have heard of and most probably Chee and Big Sis have.
I was however perplexed as to why James Brown was honored and not Gerald Ford. (hehehehe)

  3. Glad to hear I am not the only one with a weakness for that Nickelback song. I really like Scissor Sisters as well.

Hubba-hubba was chagrined to find that he didn’t know that PSB, one of his favorite bands, had a new CD out. But, I have to say we were both less than impressed with the song.

As for A-ha, I never liked “Take On Me” as much as everyone else did, and I kind of dismissed them after that. But, I was pleasantly surprised by that track.

And, Wolfmother reminds me a bit of Franz Ferdinand? Am I wrong on that?

Thanks for all the time and effort spent into getting these out to us!

  4. Too bad about Pet Shop Boys. I’m not sure how the rest of the album is, but I’m impressed that they are still recording!

A-Ha? I can take ’em or leave ’em. It seems, however, they are still very popular in Europe where they have been anything but a one hit wonder.

I’m not sure if I hear Franz when I listen to Wolfmother, but the vocalist seems to love Jack White’s vocal style.
