Mix Six: “Stars Who Sing”

Download the full mix HERE

If there’s a theme to this mix, it comes from the movie title “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.” The vanity projects of TV and movie stars sometimes have the sad side effect of charting on the top 40. Sometime I think there is a god, because there are times when we are spared from hearing some of these songs on the radio — or video when MTV and VH1 were in the business of playing videos.

Everybody buckled in? Okay, hang on ’cause it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Goldie Hawn “A Hard Day’s Night” (Download) The fact that George Martin actually asked Goldie Hawn to do this horrible cover makes me think that he was just trying to find an excuse to be in the same room with her. This is so god-awful that it’s worth at least one listen. Why I even bothered to offer it as a download is beyond me.

Eddie Murphy “Party All The Time” (Download) If there was a “best of set” in this mix, it would go to Eddie. Sure the song is cheesy, but it has RICK JAMES! And that alone is worth a replay.

Bruce Willis “Respect Yourself” (Download) The great thing about this cover by my favorite Republican actor is that he knew that for this song to have legs he had to bury himself into the mix and elevate the Pointer Sisters as the real singers. Aaaaah, an album only a mother could love…

Jack Wagner “All I Need” (Download) I was never a fan of day time soap operas, so I wasn’t aware of his General Hospital past when this song was popular.  But once he joined the cast of Melrose Place (a favorite night time soap), I just wanted him so say to Heather Locklear’s character: “Hey Amanda, you’re all I need.” If that happened, I could die happy.

Lindsay Lohan “I Decide” (Download) This could have been sung by Ashlee Simpson for all I know.  After all, Lindsay’s breathy, Auto Tune adjusted vocals sound an awful like Ashlee’s — and that’s not saying much since she can’t really sing either.

Don Johnson “Heartbeat” (Download) Can you believe that this song reached #5?  I guess it’s not as bad as some of the other crap that hits the charts, so I guess I’ll cut Don some slack.  It could have been worse, really.  He could have covered some Beatles songs.

Anyway kids, have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you back here next week.

  1. I’m glad you crossed out “good” in your post because all of these songs are very painful for me. I’m not sure if I can have a listen, it so painful 😉

    Have a good weekend!

  2. The Goldie Hawn song is SO BAD, I wonder what the hell kind of drugs they were on to make that sound like a good idea…the giggling, the snoring, UGH. It hurts to think about it.

Aren’t Heather and Jack a real life couple now? Or is she still with skinny David Spade?

  3. My goodness. “Respect Yourself” makes me feel like I’m disrespecting the great Pops Staples. Ach.

  4. Ok, I have to say that Don Johnson should have stuck to jackets with t-shirts and wicker shoes. Singing was not his forte. I must download this mix and listen to it anyway. It will take me back. Oh, do you remember the Patrick Swayze song? What is it called again?

  5. That would be “She’s Like the Wind.” A crappy song with a bad simile between “she” and “wind” that makes me think she’s like a fart.

  6. Ok, I downloaded the full mix and enjoyed it. The Jack Wagner was really over played back then, wasn’t it? And Goldie is bad.

    Good Friday entertainment 🙂

  7. You know that Jefito has a total hard-on for Jack Wagner, right?

I refuse to download any of these. I have them all anyway, though, except for the Lohan. Goldie’s cover is the one where she actually sings “sweet sheroonie,” right? Ugh. I have that album. I could have sworn there were at least one or two good covers on there, but wouldn’t you know it, I can’t think of a single one at the moment.

  8. I’m pretty sure Jeff mentioned his sexual obsession for Jack Wagner during bourbon and cigars one night after dinner.

Goldie’s cover was the only one I could get through simply because it was the only one I listened to on the CD. It was so bad that I had to lead with it.
