I told you this week’s Mix Six was going to focus on another continent. This week, we visit the music from the hit factories of India where film soundtracks have been churning out hits way before The Suits in Hollywood realized people would buy soundtracks if they had really good songs on them.

My mom, Susheela, has picked her favs from recent and classic Bollywood films (and one stage play), so put your international ears on and enjoy! Oh yeah, she’s the guest blogger, too! 🙂

DOWNLOAD SUSHEELA’S MIX HERE!

“Chura Liya (Remix)” Bally Sagoo This song is an oldie but it’s been jazzed up by Bally Sagoo. I always love the older Bollywood songs. The good thing is I can sing along knowing the lyrics very well. [PK Note: Personally, I think this mix reflects a kind of Indo-Brit vibe that was (and probably still is) popular in London, En-ga-land]

“Tere Liye” Lata Mangeshkar and Roop Kumar Rathod This song was sung in the movie Veer Zaara by my favorite actor Shahruk Khan(He is hot in Bollywood!) when he was seducing the beautiful Priety Zinta. I think everyone should see this movie! 🙂
“Chaiyya Chaiyya” Bombay Dreams: Original London Cast. I saw the play Bombay Dreams in London a few years ago, and it was absolutely spectacular! The Anglo-Brits loved the show so much that many were still singing the closing song when we were leaving the theatre and walking down the street. Oh those Brits, they can’t get enough of Bollywood!

Maar Daala” Kavita Subramaniam This song is from the movie Devdas. This is a remake of an old classic movie. During the time the Mohguls invaded India they had very posh brothels which were frequented by the rich. The Mohguls loved the Hindu women dancing the classical “Kathak” dances, so they were put in these brothels as courtesans to entertain the wealthy Muslims. This song is sung and danced by one of the Hindu dancers.

“Mere Haath Mein” Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan Ah, this movie was so romantic. Fanaa also dealt with the problem India has with Kashmir. This song was sung when the two stars eventually got married, Oh my, they were so in love. It reminded me of when Py and J got married.

“Yaadon Ki Baaraat” Lata Mangeshkar and Padmini Shivangi Here is PK’s all time favorite. He remembers this song from his childhood because I used to sing it all the time. PK’s nieces learned this song as well. I just loved teaching them Indian songs when they were young. When Maya was younger she knew a few of them, too![PK Note: Love the “La, la, la, la, la” in this song!]

  1. This will definitely help me to catch up on my severely lacking Bollywood exposure.

Yaadon Ki Baaraat was one of my favorites as a kid too 🙂

  2. Man, I remember my mom and dad playing the Yaadon Ki Baaraat album into the ground. It was a cool movie too. I like the music from Devdas and Veer Zaara! Cool mix.

  3. This is a surprise Py!! Wow! I do love these songs even though they are old classics. Thank you.

  4. Has it been over a year since you had this mix? Wow, time flies! I remember when you first posted it.

“Bai, that’s some good chunes!” LOL!
I love the jazzed up version of Chura Liya. And of course there’s Maar Daala that reminds me of my kathak dancing days.

Kudos to CG for an awesome selection!!
