This week’s mix is from J (as you already know), and I think it has a really fun vibe to it. Once I saw the song selections (based on the theme), I asked my co-worker Michael to do some quick drops to add between the songs. He was a good sport and willingly obliged. So, here ’tis! When Maya did her “Mix Six” last week, I thought….I want to do that, too! PK said, Sure, go for it! So I thought about some songs I would use, and then got busy with life and a busy week at work, and I forgot what the songs were. Last night, Ted asked me if I had gotten any work done on my “Mix Six,” and I had to admit, no, I hadn’t. So, he gave me a theme, which makes it much easier for me than just ‘pick 6 songs you like and mix em up.’ Or so I thought. Themes mean rules, and sometimes they can get in your way. The theme? Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. Since there’s six, and that’s only four, I added one bride, one groom. Sounds fair, right? Here goes:
Something Old:
INXS: Burn For You. I really liked INXS a lot, back in the day. The music was great for dancing, yet the lyrics were still cool. And Michael Hutchins may have been a skinny guy with a bob hairdo, but he was HOT.
Something New:
Shakira: Hips Don’t Lie. This was definitely the hardest category for me…I thought I could use The Killers: Mr. Brightside. I love how depressed the guy is, and yet, what a catchy pop hook! But PK is strict with them rules, and he said 2004 DOES NOT WORK. Must be 2006. Well, I don’t know much new stuff yet, especially since I’m working from home now and I find I like to listen to the birds chirping outside rather than the radio. There are a few songs that I like OK, but not enough to include on my mix. I mean, up to 10 people might listen to this thing, and I don’t want them to think I’m all ga-ga over that Gnarles Barkley song or anything. So I searched my brain, searched iTunes, etc. and with some help from PK, this is what I came up with. I like the Reggae sound of Wyclef Jean, and Shakira is always good for some ‘hip shaking fun’. Hope you like it!
Something Borrowed:
Scissor Sisters: Comfortably Numb. There are two kinds of ‘covers’ – those that stay pretty true to the original song, like maybe “Boys of Summer” by The Ataris, or Sheryl Crow doing “The First Cut is the Deepest.” Then there are the covers that take a song and own it, really make it theirs. Two of these came to mind for me: Strawberry Switchblade’s version of “Jolene,” which is a Dolly Parton classic, and the Scissor Sisters covering “Comfortably Numb.” The first time I heard it, my ears bled a little from the horror of it all, but then…I found myself rocking out and really enjoying it. So what if it sounds like the Bee Gees trying electronic and covering Pink Floyd. Enjoy, guilt free!
Something Blue:
New Order: Blue Monday. When PK and I were first dating, back in ’87-’88, I was still in my New Order/The Cure/Joy Division phase. In Stockton, knowing these bands said something about you, that you were cool and hip, and I liked that. Also, the music was GREAT. At this point, a sentimental favorite for me. (PK Note: I had to edit this song because the version on Substance was about 8 minutes long! After a few snip-snips, it’s now just a little over 4 minutes. So you can call this the “PK Edit.” )
Bride:
Liz Phair: Polyester Bride. I love this song. Just something about it. Easy to sing along, yet snarky enough for us all. “Johnny Feelgood” from the same album is worth checking out, but it doesn’t follow the bride theme, and this is a family-friendly website, and it’s not the MOST family- friendly song.
Groom:
XTC: Earn Enough For Us. Not so many songs out there for grooms. Anyone surprised? Here’s a good one about a poor guy just trying his best to get along. I considered “Big Day” off this same album, but it’s gender neutral, and besides, it’s so cynical that it kind of killed my music buzz.
So that’s it, J’s Mix Six! I hope you enjoyed it. Give PK a challenge – give him a theme, and see what he comes up with. He’s awesome, and he loves this stuff.
