 The writer’s strike really brings to light the paucity of quality (say THAT five times really fast) when it comes to television programming. Last night, I was flipping through the offerings with our “expanded basic” cable plan, and I gotta say the vast amount of nothing that passes for something occupied 73 out of 76 channels. I was mildly interested in the offerings on PBS (snicker, if you must), but I finally shut the TV off and wondered why we bother to have cable in the first place. Except for a handful of shows, we really don’t watch that much TV. Yet, every month we pay our cable bill for hours and hours of programming that we don’t bother with. A few folks have tried living without cable with mixed results.Â
I was thinking of the shows we faithfully watch, and I’m pretty sure we can watch all of them online for free not because of illegal downloads, but because the Big Three stream many of their top shows, iTunes offers downloads for a price, and there are DVDs.Â
And look, even without cable, we still have the Big Three and PBS you can get for free. So, I don’t know…what to do. Personally, I don’t think we get much value for the money we spend on cableTV, but if you asked my daughter she would think otherwise.

Of course I have cable! How else does one get the high-speed internet I need to watch the non-interactive episodic content I crave?
Internet connection via cable is a must, but it’s the whole TV cable thing that’s a dud right now. Of course, I don’t have HBO, so I might be singing a different tune if I had a better cable plan.
Maya would probably pass out if we didn’t have cable for the TV. 🙂 I’d miss Curtis and a few other shows, but not much.
