Ml did a post in September about “isims.” That is to say, words that people mispronounce. Sometimes people do get it wrong, but other times there’s a kind of regional dialect that twists the words into pronunciations that are pretty strange.
For better or worse, here goes…
1. Missouri = “Missoura”
2. Wash = “Warsh”
3. Creek = “Crick”
4. Almonds = “Ammans”
5. Rinse = “Wrench”
6. Milk = “Melk”
7. Picture = “Pitcher”
8. Crayon = “Cran”
9. Probably = “Probly”
10 Mayonnaise = “Mannaise”
11. Accessories = “Assessories”*
12. Ask = “Axe”
13. Supposedly = “Supposably”*
* Not really a dialect. More like idiocy.

Good ones! Great list to add to the “isims” 🙂 Some of those sound like people have really big tongues or something and can’t get around it to pronounce the word properly.

Yeah, “Acrossed” is a good one. I’ve also heard it pronounced “Acrosst.” I know this because I’ve done it myself.
Rinse=Wrench? How did that one come to be? A relative of an almond farmer once said to me that Almonds are on the tree and Ammans are on the ground after you knock the “L” out of them. 🙂
It seems, the Rinse = Wrench connection comes from the same part of the country where they say “Warsh.”
I like the Ammans comment, and it seems to make sense in a “funny farmer” kind of way.
How about “rut” when they mean “root” or “route.” That’s a big Utah thing.
my friend from Long Island always used to harass me for pronouncing the t in “exactly.” but I know that I’m saying it correctly!
Oh I take words a mess them up all the times for fun, and then keep doing it. Shoot darn, I don’t want to be a I-dot. I did it again…
