Avant-Weird Mix Six

Download Avant-Weird Mix Six HERE

I suppose I’m a slow learner, but I was checking my blog stats, and, well, Friday is a very slow blog day around here. And since I put work into my Mix Sixes, I want them to be heard by my readers (No matter how small the number is. And it’s the quality, not the quantity of one’s readership that counts, right?). So, I’m going to move my Mix Six to either Thursday or Wednesday. But even though I’m moving this feature to another day, I’ll probably alienate most with this mix. It was somewhat inspired by the fact that I’ve never heard any Captain Beefheart. So, I downloaded a few songs and gave them a few spins. Alas, I didn’t quite warm to the music of the Le Beef, but it was enough to inspire a Mix Six of strange and funny songs.

I should warn you, this mix is not for the faint of heart. There be monsters here, so proceed with an open and fearless mind.

Enjoy?

“Sycamore Trees” Jimmy Scott I was huge Twin Peaks fan back in the day. But this film was very disappointing even for a David Lynch fan like myself. However, seeing Jimmy Scott sing this song in the film was worth the price of admission.

“Dachau Blues” Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band The guy who, um, inspired this mix. It’s hard to believe that this album came out in 1969.

“Underneath It All” Nine Inch Nails In some ways this CD is quite unlistenable. But, when looking for “the experimental,” this song worked in a pinch. The back story on this CD is that I put it on my wish list for Xmas, and listened to it maybe twice after I got it. I went to a a used record store and tried to sell it when I realized I would probably never listen to it again, but they passed saying “We’ve got a ton of these in the used bin, so, um, sorry.” I tried to donate it to the library, and they passed on it as well.

“Fishheads” Barnes and Barnes I was looking at the play lists Dr. Demento had on his site, and for almost two decades, this song was in his top 10.

“Faaip De Oiad” Tool When I first got this CD, I was laughing when I first heard this song. I played it for a friend of mine and his only comment was: “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Make it stop!” So, I played it again.

If you’re wondering what the guy is saying in the song (?), you can click HERE for the lyrics — and I use the term “lyrics” loosely.

“O’ Sanity” Yoko Ono You know there’s probably someone on this earth who thinks Yoko is a genius. I wonder where that person is?

  1. I dunno, but Mix Six Friday means it’s Friday and I get to listen to some tunes. I guess I’ll have to get used to Mix Six Wednesday or Thursday πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the mix. I’ll listen to them today.

  2. I’ll confess that I have a soft spot for “Under the Sycamore Trees” as well. Great, though strange, and boy, it can get stuck in your head. “And I’ll see you….and you’ll see me….and I’ll see you, in the branches that blow….in the breeze…under the sycamore…trees…..” πŸ™‚

And who doesn’t love fish heads? Come on now.

  3. Excellent. Stuff like Beefheart and Yoko is the musical equivalent of bran — it isn’t usually much fun to get it down, but it helps clear the way for other essential functions.

  4. It is your blog and you are suppose to do whatever you want to, because it is yours. Do not change because of your stats, change because YOU want to.

  5. I took a fishhead out to see a movie… Hilarious! Thanks for jogging my memory. The there was “Everybody run! The Homecoming Queen has got a gun…” Ahead of its time…

  6. Man, my Dad would force me to listen to the Dr. Demento show every frickin’ Sunday night. I was usually trapped in the car and while some of the stuff was funny, my two least favorites were “Fish Heads” and “Dead Puppies.”

    Ugh.

And yeah, “I did it… for Johnny.”

“Johnny? Who’s Johnny? Is he that geek in the braces who sat behind you in Science class?”

I think I got that last line kinda wrong, but Julie Brown had a great song there!
