Welcome back kids! This week, I’ve got a guest DJ in the hizzie, and it’s none other than the talented Taylor from T-Sides! As most of you know, Mix Sixes usually have a theme, and since Taylor is a big fan of the rap, I thought I would throw her a curve ball and see if she can find rap songs that will appeal to people who generally don’t like rap (like me). π
So, let’s get it started, shall we? Taylor will take it from here!

Black Star “Astronomy (8th Light) (Listen HERE) This song has all the characteristics of good New York hip-hop. It’s on here because I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like it – people who aren’t big rap fans, included. There are throngs of people begging Talib Kweli and Mos Def to make another album, and this song is a good example of why.
Brand Nubian “Love Me Or Leave Me Alone” (Listen HERE) A lot of people I know who don’t like a lot of rap do like the song “Summertime,” and with good reason – it’s a fantastic song. This song holds a similar laid back attitude with the same kind of catchiness.
Jay-Z “99 Problems” (Listen HERE) I know, I know, most people alive on earth have heard this song already, but this song is about as rock as rap gets. This entire album is, really. It’s very atypical of a lot of rap, which is why it’s one of my favorite rap albums.
Lupe Fiasco “Daydreamin'” (Listen HERE) This uses a fantastic old-school sample that’s just plain beautiful, and he spends the entire song dissing rappers (especially rap videos). Anti-rappers should at least be able to appreciate that much.
Saul Williams “Black Stacey” (Listen HERE) “What’s that? You there, in the back… oh, you said that most rap music is about drugs, money, sex and violence? I don’t really see the problem with that, but, okay – thing is, you’re wrong.”
The Sound Providers “Braggin’ & Boastin'” (Listen HERE) Another great sample, this time with a jazzier feel. This is another song that basically exists to diss rap in general, and pokes fun at an ’80s pop star/song – you’ll know who the minute it hits the chorus.

June 22, 2007 at 5:40 amMy two favs in this mix are Sound Providers and Black Star! I really like a lot of Mos Def’s stuff, but this track is really great.

June 22, 2007 at 5:41 amIf you like the Black Star track, I recommend the whole album. It’s magnificent – one of my top 3 hip-hop/rap albums of all time.

June 23, 2007 at 6:55 amThat’s Little Brother on the Sound Providers track, isn’t it? Do you know if 9th Wonder produced it?
Robert
June 23, 2007 at 6:58 amNever mind about Little Brother. As soon as I wrote that comment, they name-checked themselves near the end of the song. And I’m guessing that Sound Providers are the producers.
Taylor
June 23, 2007 at 8:10 amYeah, I believe the sound providers are the producers – I honestly don’t know too much about the record, a friend of mine sent it to me.

June 23, 2007 at 6:24 pmTaylor did a great job with this one. While I’m not a die-hard rap fan (at all), this Mix Six accomplishes what it was intended to: it gets people interested in music way outside of their usual comfort zone.
And for what it is worth Mr. P.K., if you’re ever in the market for another guest Sixer, keep me in mind. I’d love to take a stab at it.
